I am on holiday in Makadi Bay, Egypt with the whole family. We are staying in an all inclusive hotel for seven nights and spending the days snorkelling in the Red Sea. On the first and second nights at the hotel, there have been evening entertainment. The first night consisting of street dance, a Michael Jackson impersonator and the second night belly dancing and some kind of whirling skirt dance.
It was typical stuff, not overtly sexual like a Millie Cyrus concert, but lots of hip shaking and the odd muscled torso on show during the break dance routines. Apart from the belly dancer who may have had some middle Eastern roots, but could have also been European there were no Egyptian women in the entertainment team. In fact there are hardly any in the hotel. All of the staff are men.
The female staff are all blond Russian women in their 20s and early 30s. At night they are the dancers and by day they are Yoga instructors and running other entertainment. My wife has been chatting to them, but that's a subject for another post.
I have been watching the crowd watching the show and at least 30 percent of them are Muslim women who all have their heads covered. Lastly night during a rendition of "walk like an Egyptian" by The Bangles I saw a couple of head scarfed Muslim women dancing along in the crowd. And I have seen a couple, though only a couple, of audience members in the full dish-dash with just a slit for the eyes.
It's a strange mix. One wonders what is going through their minds as they watch the music of mostly western infidels getting played and their husbands and children dancing to it alongside westerners drinking booze.

The audience is 60 percent middle Eastern, 20 percent Russian and 20 percent other nationalities.
I've seen half a dozen men with a covering of tattoos but only one woman who looked like she might be Dutch or Danish or something. Her husband looked like a museum mosaic floor so they must have had some sort of shared like for painting themselves.
Swimwear ranges from bikini to full dish dash in the water. I even saw one lady get caught on a reef by her robes. Nobody is wearing anything particularly outrageous like a thong.
Only one Chav family in the entire hotel, so that's good.

We don't have many Muslims in our area but at the store my son asked, "Why is she dressed like that?" So I loudly replied, "Because if she doesn't her husband will kill her."
Just my 2 cents.

I know a family of Syrian-Dane Muslims. Their whole thing with the modesty isn't about modesty. They've turned it into a "feminist" issue. Apparently, wearing their coverings makes them more feminist because they are choosing to do so. They have seen personal gain from adopting this position, the libs are seeking out the girls in the family for scholarships and jobs.
However, I know another Muslim family who are like home aloners of the Muslim world, who are actually doing it for the sake of modesty but it is directed towards a measured merit. The idea that every timed minute they wear it, they get so many more minutes in heaven.
Most lighter skinned Muslims that I've met listen to Western music while the African ones do not, but their children do.

When it comes to modesty, I tend to think that women who cover themselves head to ankle are sending the message, "I am a sex object, don't look at me.", whereas women who go to the opposite extreme, and show off everything are saying, "I am a sex object, look at me." My personal goal is to find that happy medium between the two that says "I am a woman, not a sex object,"

I hadn't thought about it that way before, but I think you're right. And I think that's not just the message sent, but probably the message intended by Islam, grounded on the Islamic view of women.

Thank you, Cailin, but I can't take too much credit....I read it in a comment on a blog post about modesty a few years ago. But, it really rung true to me, and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I would clarify that it doesn't apply to nuns, though. They are consecrated for a very specific purpose, which requires the habit. Part of their sacrifcie is the giving up of something good (their femininity, potential motherhood, marriage, a share in God's creation, the goods of the world, etc...) for a greater good. The habit is more of a signifier of that which they have sacrificed, rather than a projection of the distorted view of their bodies, and its meaning and purpose. Any nun worth her salt recognizes the true dignity and worth of women (and men, of course, but modesty is more complicated when it comes to females).

It is very strange but a large number of them are dressed like women of ill-repute under their coverings. They also love designer items. I watched a documentary about it, apparently in the company of other women, and those they can show themselves to, it is like a bizarre "hotness" competition. Pardon the expression. I'm sure this is just another deviation in the practice of their false religion because I do know a few that really do believe in modesty. Keep in mind that false feminism is infecting Islam and so we are seeing them go through a huge transition. In another hundred years, I doubt they majority will even wear headscarves. Hopefully that will be due to a mass conversion and miracle, Our Lady of Fatima gives me hope for this, and not due to the general moral decay of the world.

We have a number of Muslims and people from other extreme religions who come riding at our farm from time to time, so I get to hear some interesting stories...
In a number of Middle Eastern countries it is considered as a public offense if a woman does not wear a veil over her head, and even visited are forced to do so by the public authorities...
One Jewish Lady who came to our farm wore a wig to have her hair covered but not stand out... Weird, right?
Last Saturday a Saudi girl came out to go riding and said that in Saudi women are not allowed to ride horses or drive cars in public, or they will be arrested!!! (Even women visiting Saudi Arabia have to have a taxi or a man pick them up from the airport!)

Much like other middle eastern food. Local dishes worth eating. The other stuff a poor facsimile of food.
Yogurts, ice cream, tomatoes are all tasty. Cheese is processed rubbish apart from cream cheese which is nice. Food in Israel is the best. Only meat here worth eating is lamb or chicken.

Was the real motivation of this post telling us that you take your children to see bellydancing and women in bikinis?
