Were the Nails in Our Lord's hands through the wrists or palms? Most crucifixes show the palms, but I have a friend who insists this isn't correct.

I have read where the nails had to be in the wrists and not the palms because the palms couldn't support the weight of the body if the nails were placed in them.

And that is my friends argument, also. My kids were asking, I think one of them was drawing a picture, and I thought I'd ask here.

I have always wondered why Padre Pio had the stigmata in his palms if the nails were in Jesus' wrists??

I believe that it is a Tradition of the Church that the Nails were driven through the palms of Our Blessed Lord's Hands. The reason for this is that the Bible says, "For these things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him." (John 19:36) There would have been no way for the nails to go through His wrists without breaking any bones. Here is an interesting article on the topic: www.catholicplanet.com/articles/article16.htmAnd another: www.bibleserralta.com/JesusNailedByHisHands.htmlHope this helps clarify everything!

I remember hearing it said that one of the tests for validity of a person's stigmata was whether it was in the palms of the hands of the wrist... It is was in the wrist, the stigmata was considered as illegitimate, and was considered as not from God.

Although the first link says they were the through the heel of the hand, the second says the palm with better explanations.

The assumption is that the Romans only used the nails to hold the convicts tp the cross...there is no evidence this assumption is true...all the Gospels say is that He was nailed to the cross...I dont see any theological offense if ropes were also used...I believe because of stigmata that it was palms...no need to assume He hung from His palms only...is there?

And, yes, I agree that the 2nd link was the better of the two.
