What I'd also like to hit are the misconceptions, like the one about the fishing industry and eating fish on Friday. People are generally pretty nice about the abstinence but I know I could step up my game with regards to using to pique interest and to plant seeds. In a world of self indulgence, fasting and self denial are now radical. I think its important to point out its a symbolic act not a scientifically specific act...Yes fish bleed and are "meat"...but they are not "flesh meat". I think we get tripped up by trying to be too technical and "accurate". Its good to point out that most people eat meat and it is "hard" to abstain from...therefore why its a penitential act.

In a world of self indulgence, fasting and self denial are now radical. One thing this reminds me of is what Father Faber wrote on the subject of mortification in his book, Growth in Holiness: “Indeed modern luxury and effeminacy, which are often pleaded as arguments for an abatement of mortification, may just as well be called forward to maintain the opposite view. For if it be a special view of the Church to bear witness against the world, her witness must especially be borne against the reigning vices of the world; and therefore in these days, against effeminacy, the worship of comfort and the extravagances of luxury. I believe that if this unhappy land is ever to be converted, of which there are many hopes and no signs, it will be by some religious order or orders who shall exhibit to a degraded and vicious people the vision of evangelical poverty in its sternest perfection... If the Church has to witness always against the reigning vices of the world, each soul has likewise, if not to witness, at least to defend itself against them. And how shall it defend itself against the worship of bodily comforts except by depriving itself of them?”

Isn't it acceptable to replace abstinence from red meat with abstinence from another food you normally eat and enjoy? No.

My main go to is: The shedding of our Lords blood on Good Friday was such a tragedy and violation of justice that we abstain from spilling any more blood on fridays...hence abstaining from red fleshmeat. It is a symbolic act of love and appreciation and miniscule sacrifice in remembering the Lords suffering. That's usually how I explain it but people get confused about the red fleshmeat thing. Someone recently was confused that it did not include eggs. It's hard to get all of the facts in quickly, before people stop listening, and to be concise yet appropriate for the situation. Why on earth would it include eggs?!!

Hahaha, Rita! Seriously though, I think we get confused with vegans. It is true, Clotilde. A lot of people think that we can't have any sort of animal products at all. I am grateful that we can still have fish on Fridays!

We appreciate all the little things SO MUCH more than a lot of other people!

So, it is sort of random, but... I remember someone mentioning that frogs are not considered as meat. Anyone heard of this before? (Not like I would be eating them... Just curious... )
