I have recently been in a few situations where I had to explain this to non-Catholics. I did fine in explaining the actual law but felt I could have done better. Not better in terms of what the law is but explaining why we do it in such a way that draws people to want to know more and is edifying. In short, I'd like to frame my answer better.
How would you do this, and what sources would you draw upon?

Isn't it acceptable to replace abstinence from red meat with abstinence from another food you normally eat and enjoy?

Isn't it acceptable to replace abstinence from red meat with abstinence from another food you normally eat and enjoy? No. That's from the 1983 "code," which does not bind Catholics.

My main go to is: The shedding of our Lords blood on Good Friday was such a tragedy and violation of justice that we abstain from spilling any more blood on fridays...hence abstaining from red fleshmeat. It is a symbolic act of love and appreciation and miniscule sacrifice in remembering the Lords suffering.

It is a symbolic act of love and appreciation and miniscule sacrifice in remembering the Lords suffering. That's usually how I explain it but people get confused about the red fleshmeat thing. Someone recently was confused that it did not include eggs. It's hard to get all of the facts in quickly, before people stop listening, and to be concise yet appropriate for the situation.

I have found that most people accept the idea of doing it as a penance and in honor of the passion and death of Our Lord. And those who don't accept it, well, they won't usually accept it no matter how hard you try and no matter what great explanation you give. So, I give a simple answer and leave the rest to God.

How are you doing, Vox? Still stuck in my conservative Novus Ordo church job, but can at least fulfill the Sun obligation as there is now a sede chapel an hour and a half away with a sun night Mass. Sunday is a really long day for me now---3 Novus Ordo Masses in the morning and one true Mass at the end of the day. Husband says I can quit after I have amassed a certain amount of money in savings.

What I'd also like to hit are the misconceptions, like the one about the fishing industry and eating fish on Friday. People are generally pretty nice about the abstinence but I know I could step up my game with regards to using to pique interest and to plant seeds. In a world of self indulgence, fasting and self denial are now radical.
