Salve Maria.
Recently, during my theological studies, I came into contact with the nature of lying. Much to my surprise, I discovered that lying is considered a sin univocally, under any circumstances, without exceptions. I knew this was Saint Thomas's position, but it was a surprise to learn that all scholastic sources I found agree with the position. Since to me this position is absurd and indefensible, I would like to ask for your help in finding authoritative sources, such as theologians, church fathers and Saints, who defend the position that lying under extraordinary conditions (as in self-defense for example) is not a sin. Would anyone know about sources like this?

My mouth is made for speaking the truth. One can choose to not say anything, but that is not lying per se. If suggest looking at St Alphonsus de Ligouri as a possible source to defend your position. I tend to prefer the contrary position.

St Alphonsus! Ok. I’ll take a look on his moral theology. Thank you.

Hi Alyosha,
Here is something that might steer you in the right direction:
I also have the book/Thesis by Fr. Dorszynski cited at the end of the above quote by. Fr. Connell. It elaborates on the above but in much more detail. I will scan it for you later this week if I can find it in my stash of books. I became interested in this question when our communist government here in Canada demanded a vaccine passport during Covid and was planning to restrict movement even between provinces.
