The Pope, Benedict XV, in his encyclical Ad Beatissimi Apostolorum, 1914, teaches Catholics that they must not use qualifiers to their identification as Catholic. The Pope states that this is his will that Catholics not use such terms, but also gives reasons why:
1. That they are "profane novelties of words," out of harmony with both truth and justice. 2. They give rise to great trouble and confusion among Catholics. 3. That Catholicism does not admit of more or less, but must be held as a whole or as a whole rejected. 4. There is not any need to add qualifiers to the identification as Catholic.
