In Britain last year, there was some controversy as some 'Indult' priests offered Requiem Masses for Her late Majesty. This is clearly against Catholic practice according to a large number of sources, but various figures (Dr Joseph Shaw and James Bogle most prominently) have defended the practice, mainly through a misunderstanding of membership of the Church (ironically the same point which prevents mainly Catholics from recognising the Interregnum) and appeal to conciliar authorities.
Peter Dimond recently produced a video on this subject in which he quoted various sources, two of which, Litteras Accepimus and Officium, were letters of Gregory XVI most explicit in the condemnation of offering public Requiems for those who died outside of the Church. In one of these letters, Gregory XVI castigated a bishop of Bavaria for allowing a public Requiem for Queen Caroline of Bavaria, a Protestant. The parallel is quite striking.
However, naturally I somewhat distrust the Dimonds and I wish to see the original documents. Irritatingly, the source of the letters was not given; they were not properly cited. I wrote to Most Holy Family Monastery requesting the source, but I have not received a reply. Would anyone know where to look for these letters? I believe that they were private correspondence, so they have not received the most attention. The fact that they were written in Latin will not be much of a problem.

Hello Marcellusfaber, You are wise to distrust the Dimonds, but in this case, they are correct. A public requiem mass cannot be said for a Protestant. Regarding their sources, it's interesting that they don't present the actual documents, which immediately makes me wonder if they just read it in a footnote somewhere and are using it, giving the impression that they actually have the documents. Who knows though. You may find the documents in Latin in the Bullarum of Pope Gregory XVI. That is where I would start looking. Keep in mind though that "indult" priests do not adhere to Pre-Vatican II law, and do adhere to the 1983 Code and what came after, so they are most likely basing their decision to do this on that. It seems like the Conciliar sect can't get enough of communicatio in sacris with schismatics and Protestants, so this doesn't surprise me. In the meanwhile, in your search for those other documents, you can read a good explanation of this published in the IER, 1885, that I posted here years ago: tradcath.proboards.com/thread/1316/private-masses-deceased-protestant-liviusThe lengthy footnote beginning on page 144, which continues onto page 145, explains this matter. On page 145, read #4 and #5 of the footnote which specifically deals with this, and states that public masses for a Protestant are against the law of the Church.

I've found these letters in the Acta of Gregory XVI (volume III, published in 1902, pages 199 and 222) at the British Library. How do I post a pdf file to the forum?

There are different ways to do this. There are PDF generators online, but a simple way is to save the photos to your books, then upload the PDF from your books, to your Google Drive, and then it's done. Then just make sure you set your Google Drive setting to allow anyone with the link to view it, and then post it for others to read. That's the way I do it, and it's easy and fast.
