The following, “Eastern Orthodox Theology,” was a lecture given by Fr. Clement Englert at the Tenth Annual Convention of the Catholic Theological Society of America, which took place in New York City, New York, June 27-29, 1955.

The article is a great explanation of, and debunking of, the Orthodox denial of the truths of the Faith, as taught by the Church since the beginning. It is not common to find many good articles that take on “Orthodox” heresies against the Faith, as the pre-Vatican II apologists who defended the Faith against sectarians were almost always concerned with far more aggressive Protestant heresies and errors, and the passive “Orthodox,” were not given the attention they needed or deserved.
The article’s relevance to our times should be obvious. As the crisis deepens in the Church, some Catholics are beginning to doubt the Church’s claims, and are exploring and in some cases embracing the so called Orthodox as the solution to what appears to be to them a defected and corrupted Catholic Church. This article demonstrates that the “Orthodox” have not maintained the true Faith as taught by Our Lord on many matters, such as their ideas on divorce, papal primacy, the nature of the hierarchy, etc. The “Orthodox” sects have not maintained the orthodox Faith despite their carefully and rigorously maintaining the beautiful liturgies and sacramental rites of the Church.
The article will hopefully help confused Catholics realize that the so called Orthodox are not orthodox in their Faith, but hold to a belief system directly at odds with the teaching of Our Lord. Regarding the crisis in the Church, there are explanations that can demonstrate that the four marks of the Church remain with the Catholics who believe the true Faith and reject the teaching of the Conciliar sect. The Orthodox are not the answer, they are merely one more sect on the very large menu of sectarian groups. The temptation to flee to them due to their beautiful and valid liturgies is just that, a temptation, as these Orthodox sects do not and have not ever held to the same Faith as taught by Jesus Christ our Lord.
