I have a very math-resistant 10 year old son. He does ok but just HATES it. I found the best curriculum for a child like him. It's called Life of Fred.
It is a series of literature type books that teach basic math principles (these books go from beginning math all the way up to college level). You follow 5 year old Fred, who is a Math professor at Kittens University as he goes about his daily life. The books are so silly and funny that they just draw the child in. The practice is very light so we supplement with the free online practice website XTRA math.
My son reads the chapter out loud and works the problems at the end of the chapter. We check answers together. He is loving every second of it. He asks "please can we do just one more chapter" every day. I don't know about you but this is a first for us. haha!
I highly recommend these books for anyone who is homeschooling or even for extra practice for children educated outside the home. They are a little pricey but non-consumable so you could use them for many children. There is also the added bonus of several mentions of God (just simple things like Fred marveling at God's creation).
I purchased through Rainbow Resources. There is a price drop if you purchase them as a group instead of individually. Regardless of the age of the child, they recommend starting at Book 1 (Apples) and working their way up the alphabet (through the series). I agree. Even though the first books are below my child's level, he is having so much fun reading them. The child would miss much of the story (which is an important part of this curriculum) if they started with the more advanced books.
***I know I sound like I'm selling these or something. lol I assure you I am not. I just struggled for so long to find the right books and am very excited to finally have done so.***
