Started weeding my strawberries. What a job! We've been eating a lot of cucumbers and starting to get tomatoes.

I have two new chickens who seem to be of the more stupid end in that they cant seem to figure out their coop. I made a loft style perch at the top of the coop with a small internal ladder they can climb to reach it (along with a strawed area to get the hint where to lay) but they apparently are too stupid to climb up themselves. My last chickens couldnt climb high enough fast enough. Damn coons!

Made my first-ever batch of salsa. The finished product didn't taste like salsa, but since I'm 100% sure it was made with tomatoes, peppers, onions, cilantro, etc...I'm just going to tell myself it does.

Roasting first will bring out the flavor a little more, also make sure to add lime and salt. It can also be the type of tomatoes you use.

I called a couple people and am going to try a new recipe next batch. I did put in some lemon juice but maybe I'll have to get some lime.

We have all but let our garden go. We've torn up part of it already. We're about ready to pick the last of the cantaloupes, and we ate the last watermelon the other day. The tomatoes are same as done and the squash are on their way out. The peppers however, are going strong. There are hundreds of them out there ready to be picked. It's been the best year for peppers I've ever had.
We've already started planning our garden for next year. That is to say, we are taking a break from gardening! Our plot will consist of only a few plants for fresh eating.

Speaking of family arguments, my mom and I actually argued about what tastes better beefstake or various heirlooms--yellow, orange, and black.

That is an argument more my pace. I have many ardent opinions on heirloom tomatoes of all shapes, sizes, and colors. They are my favorite. Beefsteaks are great tomatoes for fresh eating on sandwiches and salads, but when you step into the world of heirlooms, you suddenly have much more room for varied uses.

Yesterday the children and I froze sweet corn, ate cantalope with dinner and made eggplant parmesan for supper. A great day!

Last night I picked six yellow tomatoes and made a sauce with ricotta, yeller tomater, and a red tomater I had sitting around. I also picked a few Hungarians and will be making some sauce soon. We also had our first zucchini, and we are going on vacation soon, I cannot imagine what it will look like when we get back.

That would get a few comments at supper.

My chickens have finally started to coop themselves at dusk...now they better start egging....or else! Do you keep them in till about noon? My dad always did that. Something I didn't know when we attempted layers the first time. Our chickens laid all over the yard, the dogs ate most of the eggs and we butchered them after a couple years because my husband was so mad.

Well they are just starting to get the regimen ...I open the door in the early morning when I leave for work....and close it at night when they have cooped. My chicks always laid in the morning between sunrise and noon. We have a 20x10' paddock the coop is enclosed in...so they can only lay in there...I want them to lay in a little straw filled squat hut and I keep putting them in there but well see...they like privacy\ to lay
