My sons love to hear stories on how the martyrs died (what boy doesn't?) so I thought I'd buy a book of short stories about saints and then their deaths. The reviews on Amazon sounded great for The Roman Martyrology.
Was I mistaken or what!!?
The Roman Martyrology mainly lists saints and for some tells where they lived, what order they founded and may tell how they died. I am hugely disappointed.
Does anyone know of a book that has more stories of martyrs, perhaps a bit about their lives and then details of their deaths? Someone suggested The Catechist but as of now I have been unable to find that book online as I don't know who wrote it or publishes it. We already have Butler's but I am looking for a more detailed book than that. Thanks

Really? We love the Roman Martyrology! The problem with most martyrs is that they are pretty obscure before the account of their deaths. Most of them were of little consequence in the worldly sense, that short stories or sometimes even a few lines is all that exists.
Which Butlers do you have? The four volume set is pretty detailed. I believe there is an abridged version out there somewhere. I have a large number of saints books but I don't think any of them cover just one martyr for the reason I outline above.
Fr. Lord has some little Saint books but I think each page is only 5-6 sentences.

I will look at the one you suggested. I am going to keep trying to find The Catechist, also. We have the saints books by Fr. Lovasik and Fr. Lord, but my one son in particular wants more. I'll look into it.

Have you ever heard of the book, The Golden Legend? It contains some of the most detailed dialogue of the early martyrs that I have seen. It even makes me cry sometimes!

I'm not sure if you said you homeschool or not but you could really piece together quite a great Ancient Rome study, which would set a nice background for the Roman Martyrs. It would give it a lot of context and I believe there are sites where you can take 360 "tours" of various sites. If your child can grasp the culture and times in which this happened, I think it would draw a deeper understanding. If you are into crafting, you might even make a sarcophagus cover like one in the catacombs. There is a lot of art and symbolism to be studied which go along with the martyrs, I think there are at least a few books, if not books with chapters on this topic alone.

That sounds interesting and my son would love it. I used to write up my own Unit Studies but now with four homeschooling I need the structure of curricula. For now I'll have to be content with stories and youtubes of saints but I will try something maybe for the fall. I am going to look into the books recommended, though. If anyone knows about The Catechist or where I can find it I would love to hear from you!
