And Doug Jones won, which actually shocked me. Normally, one thinks of Alabama and the South as fairly safe red strongholds.

No, Roy Moore was just very controversial. Midterms are in 2020 and Doug Jones could easily lose. This wasn't a partisan election, this was a "not Roy Moore" election.

The accusations (whether true or not) clearly hurt him, but he also made mistakes.
It's a shame, because if he was elected he would have been on of the most conservative members of the Senate. It also puts the Democarts into striking distance of taking the Senate, making Trump's appointment power for conservative judges all but gone, if they get a couple more seats.
