I thought I would start a thread where we could list our favorite places. It doesn't have to be a shrine. One of my favorite places when going through Iowa is the Grotto of Redemption, so if you are ever in Iowa be sure to make a side trip to see the Grotto. It is absolutely, positively, worth your time. Hmmm, maybe by state in no particular order:
North Dakota: Painted Canyon, Jamestown (village and world's largest Buffalo) Arizona: Grand Canyon, Walnut Canyon, eating TN/North Carolina: Smokies Maryland: Mother Seton Home, Holy Land of America (this might be in DC), Baltimore Aquarium, eat crab cakes NY: Niagra Falls, Our Lady of Victory, Watkins Glen SP, Mother Cabrini Shrine, Ellis Island, eat in NYC Kentucky: Natural Bridge SP, Mammoth Springs Wyoming: Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP Virginia/WVA: Blue Ridge Parkway, Jamestown, Williamsburg, anything historic but I've done so much I can't even recount it all Montana: Great Falls, Lewis and Clark Caverns (also a SP), Glacier NP South Dakota: Wind Cave, Badlands, jerky stores Nevada: Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas (without children, if possible, but we sure did have fun there when I was a kid), Death Valley Colorado: anywhere with scenery Idaho: I've only been to the pan handle but there is so much to do here, lovely state Oregon: Waterfall trail, Pacific coast, hated Portland though New England states: Kancamagus highway and White mountains of NH, Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, Maine Diner, Plimouth Plantation, Old Sturbridge Village, King Arthur Flour (ate there and took a cooking class once), Cape Cod, Plum Island NWR Washington State: all National Parks, they are all great, I loved staying in state parks too. Of course, visiting MSM was neat too, if only to catch up with old friends and acquaintances Utah: it's just a fabulous drive, loved driving through and seeing so many things as a child PA: Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities, we used to go and ride the incline and the food is good, from fries to four star restaurants, I have good memories of going there with my parents. I liked the Neumann Shrine in Philadelphia as well as the historic stuff. We also have done some historic things throughout the state, like state and national parks.
I'm from Ohio so: Lake Eerie, Kelly's and Put-in-bay for wineries and a giant geode that you can walk through, Cleveland Mertopark Zoo, eating at ethnic places in Cleveland, Parma for Italian food, West Side Market, maple sugaring tours at Malabar SP and Farm, Mohican SP, Hocking Hills SP, Columbus, for food and ethnic grocery stores (we grew up going to Cargirly mannas and the French Market, which are both now closed), the Ohio Village, German Village, Columbus Zoo, Jungle Jim's In Cincinnati, and pretty much every museum there. There are also the Shrine of the Holy Relics, Our Lady of Sorrows Shine, Basillica of Our Lady of Consolation for Catholic things.
The worst states are MO, WI, NJ, RI, NE, CT and OK. That's just my opinion based on what I did when I was there, planning trips, and driving through.
I did include 3-4 things I wanted to do but couldn't, however my to do list is still pretty big.
