The following, "The History and Spirit of Holy Week," Miller, John C.S.C, was published in the American Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. CXXXVI, No. 4, April, 1957; pp. 217-241.

(Note to reader: this is a very good explanation of the history and spirit of the Holy Week and the basis of the changes made by Pope Pius XII in 1955.
I will say on a personal note, that one commentator many years ago, when I posted this article on a different forum, used an ad hominem against Fr. Miller, and stated that after the Council, he could be accused of modernism. Whether or not that charge stands against Fr. Miller is irrelevant to whether or not this article and its explanation of the history and reasoning for Pope Pius XII's new law is correct and accurate.
The article stands or falls on its own merits, it's either true and accurate or it is not. If anyone wants to challenge it, then do so, but attack the article and not waste time on attacking its author. The fact is that many bishops and priests, known for orthodoxy crumbled after Vatican II, and most especially into the 1970's, so it's not shocking if this is that happened to Fr. Miller, and it's not proof that his orthodoxy was lacking in the 1950's when this article was written.
One last point, the American Ecclesiastical Review at this time, during the 1950's, was edited by Msgr. Joseph Fenton, who I don't think needs any introduction. It was the monthly magazine that was known for its doctrinal orthodoxy and fully in line with Rome under Pope Pius XII. To think that anything modernist would have been snuck past Fenton is ridiculous. He was, in my opinion, the greatest theological mind ever produced by the Catholic Church in America. )
