How does this work...do you simply say internally Im offering this up to God for such and such? Or is there some formal thing to do?

I offer up all my works and sufferings of the day with my morning prayers. So long as you have the intention of offering it up to God and you are acting with the right intention, then that is what is required as far as I understand.

Yes, this is the way I have always remembered it. When the suffering is particularly hard I sometimes throughout the day stop for a minute to say an extra few prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be... Or "Lord Jesus Christ Crucified have mercy on us/me!")

Hi Voxx, Yes, it is a private internal act of giving the suffering for God and knowing that God permitted it. The dispositions would be remaining at peace during the suffering, and seeing it as a gift to you to make you better and holier and not, on the flip side, resenting the suffering and becoming bitter about it. There is the book of Job which is a great resource into how one such remain peacefully disposed to God during great suffering. In his case, he lost all of his wealth, his health and societal standing, as he became a leper, and his wife and and all of his children were killed. God allowed Job to undergo all of this, and no matter what happened to him, he remained steadfast and loyal to God, never doubting in Him and loving Him. This is the model we are meant to follow in suffering. There is a good book too, republished years ago, but also online that describes in detail how to respond to suffering when it happens: archive.org/details/TrustfulSurrenderToDivineProvidence/mode/2up
