I was thinking yesterday that I am going to pick up some herb plants over the weekend, since my seeds didn't take off well. I buy a basil plant like every time I pass one for sale. I have four kinds of basil in my herb garden. This is my second year doing it but my biggest suprise in cooking with herbs is that I really like fresh mint and lovage is a great substitute for celery, one leaf will replace celery in an entire pot of soup.

What do you cook with mint? We use ours mostly for drinks.
I find with basil that I either have tons of it, or it completely fails. Parsley, too.

Salad dressings and mostly Greek food, like lemon rice, lamb meatballs, Greek marinade, and tzatziki sauce. I'd like to say I've used it in Indian cooking but I don't remember. But yep, great in drinks, chocolate mint in my ice water and apple mint in my iced tea are the best.

Today I've weeded a tomato and pepper patch, the rhubarb, the asparagus, the melons and the blueberries. 90 degrees and 90% humidity made it a rather unpleasant experience, but looking at my weed free patches of garden made it all worth it! I'll not be doing that again though, it's all getting mulched- hopefully by tomorrow.
I also strolled the garden to monitor progress as I've been gone the past few days. The green beans are setting A LOT of beans. Great year for beans, I guess! Also, we have our first zucchini on! That should be on our plates within the next couple days I would imagine. Also, the tomatoes look better this year than they ever have before. The fruits are huge and prolific. I've been on the lookout for slugs. They will not be taking half my crop this year! And I was excited to see that there are quite a few peppers now setting on.

I wish I was better about cooking with herbs. There are a few that I cook with regularly now, but it took years to do that. I plant different types of herbs and never end up using them. My husband, in our short amount of time being married, pointed that out to me this spring as I was browsing the herb section at the nursery. "Are you sure you should buy those? You never use them." Lol. To which I replied, "But this year I am going to!" He just shook his head and smiled as I put them in the basket. I'm serious, though. This year I am determined to use every herb I've got in the garden.

I'm very embarrassed to say it but I planted the six blueberry bushes that I bought a month ago. I was indecisive about where to plant them but I ended up doing it near some of the other fruit trees so if we want to fence them off to keep animals out (mostly thinking deer and bears, though it would probably not stop a bear), it should be easy. I also thought it would be attractive to bees.

Dug a 12 foot by 8 foot by 6 foot hole and filled it with rubble.
Cheaper than hiring a skip and much more fun.

Today we rearranged some planters, filled some, and prepared them for extra plants. My younger son weeded the dahlia bed. My oldest daughter planted a few stray herbs and medicinal plants; also watered everything. My oldest son learned how to amend the soil under a pine, planted a rose bush, a lilac, bleeding hearts, Black-eyed Susans (my mom's favorite), and the grape vine. We also mulched around a few items. I helped everyone and kept things going, while explaining to them why we were doing things one way or the other and what happens when you do things the wrong way. The trouble buddies got into some juice boxes and hid, thinking I wouldn't notice.
Last fall, I dug up some hostas because they are the worst, but I also dug up some irises because I didn't know what they were and they didn't bloom. I threw them in the woods and they made a new home and were flourishing. My daughter cut me the sole iris that grew and put it in a vase. They are my favorite flowers so maybe I will be able to save them and transplant them somewhere else. I have other irises that did not bloom which need to be divided and transplanted so that's on my list now.
I also got a full, uninterrupted day of homeschooling in.

Iris are lovely flowers. There are so many different colors and varieties! We have a deep purple variety that's very striking and has the most appealing fragrance.
Today so far I've weeded the flower bed, the herbs and the cucumbers. I also trained the cucumbers up the trellis.

Just watering and weeding lately. The kids found a few more budding tomatoes, and our first little cucumber today . I also saw one, tiny basil sprout, and two small parsley sprouts . I had given up on those two. The cilantro has been sprouting all over the place. Watermelon and canteloupe are vining nicely, and covered in flowers. Hopefully they make this year. I've never had luck with them.

Got the whole winter squash plot mulched. That was a job and half! I'm so relieved that it's done though, it was getting annoying hanging over my head.

set A deadfall trap with 120 lb stormdrain grill to utterly crush and destroy the ##$#$/#! Bandit coon that killed my last chicken last night. I have a can of sardines in oil taped to a single picket holding up the grate. I hope the sob suffers!
