In light of the recent election in once Catholic Ireland which resulted in legalizing a mother to murder her unborn baby, it’s worth bringing up the forgotten teaching on the Natural Law.
It does not take the Faith to grasp that abortion is immmoral, it is part of the Natural Law. I posted a good commentary on the natural law HERE
There are those that pretend that immorality such as abortion, contraception or sodomy are just matters of religion, but that view is built on a false premise. One can, through right reason, conclude that such sins are evil, and one can grasp this without the gift of Faith. Throughout most of world history, in varying societies and cultures, many that were not Catholic, it was understood that practices as named above were evil, and laws were in effect on a civil level to punish those actions. This did not just happen in Catholic states, but also in non-Catholic countries.
The reason why mankind understood such matters of morality even without the Catholic Faith is because man has the ability to reason, and reason must be oriented to the correct end of actions. Once the fundamentals of the Natural Law are denied or ignored, there is no basis of natural morality, and by that, reason no longer plays a role in grasping the what is right or wrong, what is just or unjust. The effects are obvious, without the Natural Law, good morals and justice will no longer govern man or society, and all moral standards will be arbitrary based only on whatever is acceptable by people at any given moment, not perennial principles built on right reason. There will be absolutely no stability, everything will be in constant flux.
In the United States, which is a non-Catholic state, for example, abortion, sodomy, and contraception were all outlawed in all states prior to the 1960’s. The law was based on right reason governed by the principles of the Natural Law. The same could be said of countless other governments. Mankind has not only rejected the supernatural Faith of the Church, but is also rejecting even right reason, so this descent is into an abyss only seen by the most depraved men and societies in world history, in societies such as Sodom and Gommorah, and other depraved societies in history.
The terrifying thing for all of us today is that this is the first time in history that the entire world as a body has rejected right reason that is inherent in our nature as human beings. We are in uncharted waters, and unless the Church as the beacon of light shines the light of truth once again, things can only get worse and worse at an accelerated pace.
