This in from Rorate Caeli, emphasis added:
It’s worth noting that the press has focused only in Francis’ denial of of the truth about Hell, which is a heresy, but there is another heresy in his statement, which is the denial of the immortality of the soul. A soul cannot cease to exist, it will in the end live forever either with God or in Hell, separated eternally from God.

The Vatican establishment is trying to play down the controversy:
This a very weak statement by the Vatican, which fails to get at the crux of the matter, which is whether Francis denied Catholic teaching on Hell and the immortality of the soul.
The reporter may have “reconstructed” some of the interviews, and may not have used a ”faithful transcription of the words of the Holy Father,” but all of that is irrelevant. The article states that this reporter doesn’t use recordings or notes, so his getting details wrong is possible, but so long as the crux of the matter is correct, that’s what matters.
It seems to me unlikely that the reporter misunderstood a statement from Francis saying that there is no Hell and that souls that would otherwise be damned just cease to exist. That’s a very striking and precise statement by a man who claims to be Pope, so I don’t think a listener of those words would get it wrong,
If the reporter did get it wrong, then what was Francis actually saying? The Vatican fails to answer that. Also, if there was a mistake on such a grave and public matter, considering the massive scandal that would ensue, you would think that Francis would want to clearly reaffirm the teaching of the Church. So far, nothing but crickets and evasion by Francis and his underlings, which only supports the veracity of Scalfari‘s report.
