Hi, My name is Sharon and I live in Memphis. I'm a convert. I've gone from Baptist, to nothing, to Presbyterian, to Anglican, to Novus Ordo, to Indult Latin Mass, to SSPX, and finally CMRI sedevacantist. I am the only practicing sede in my area and I drive nearly two hours to go to Mass once a month. But I'm so happy to finally be learning the true Catholic faith, and I have a wonderful priest, Fr. Oswalt, who truly cares about our souls. I'm scheduled to have my first Confession and first Holy Communion later this month!
Now for my question. Has anybody here read or heard anything about the book Black Legends and the light of the world" by Dr. John Rao (D. Phil, Oxford)? I have a friend who was almost sedevacantist. In fact help and his family had quit attending Mass because there want a sedevacantist chapel in or area for about 5 months. He read this book, decided there is really nothing new going on in the church after all and is back at the Latin Mass within the Novus Ordo Church. He recommended I read it but I only got part way through it before I saw things I wasn't really sure about. I'm wondering if he had either misapplied good information or made a decision based on bad information. If you guys know anything about this book or its author please let me know.

Honestly, I know nothing about the book. What I do know about is History. Anyone can put any spin or bias on anything they like. A historical writer does not have to show you all of the facts, especially the ones that contradict his sources. A second point is that a historian is not necesarily a theologian nor is he likely to have a background that enables him to explain history from a perspective which causes the reader to understand events in Church history. Most historians are entirely clueless about how controversial historical events work from a theological perspective.
If you wanted to really go in depth and dissect the book, I suppose we could. Generally, I try to stick to approved pre-Vatican 2 sources when reading on anything regarding the Church.
You are at least intelligent to see that there could be more to the story! I happen to think your associate is incorrect. Our current state is absolutely unprecedented. If he's going to the diocesan Latin mass and not the Novus Ordo, he still knows something is wrong. Many people get overwhelmed by the Crisis and revert back to a "safe" place.
Okay, serious stuff aside, welcome! I was in your beautiful state for the first time ever two years ago. I didn't have the chance to go to Memphis but it is still on my list.

Welcome to the forum and to the Faith! So excited for you and your upcoming First Confession and First Communion! My fiance went through a similar road as you except that he completely jumped from non-denominational Christian to novus ordo to CMRI. Oh, and though he is air force and not there now, his is originally from TN, and he grew up close to Nashville! As Andrew often tells me, once he became Catholic all history pointed to traditional Catholicism as being correct. I think that your friend probably got tired of fighting. It is not easy to be a traditional Catholic and always be fighting against the pressure around you. For me, I grew up novus ordo and so it was harder to make the break but in the end I realized that even the Indult was tainted because the novus ordo ordination of priests was completely messed up and changed from that of the traditional rite. So, even in the chance that the novus ordo was valid per-say, their priests are most likely invalid anyhow. So, even staying away from the Indult is a must for me. It is not always easy constantly fighting... All of my family is novus ordo and there is A LOT of confrontation that I get for being a traditional Catholic. So, that being said... We are all here for you if you have any questions, concerns or just want to chat with your fellow traditional Catholics! Keep fighting the good fight and may God bless you! Rita

Sharon your friend is welcome here. We do not discriminate against indult. Maybe if he has friendly relations with this forum he might change his mind.

Hi Sharon, Welcome to the forum. I'm not familiar with the book by Dr. Rao, sorry. I have corresponded a couple of times with Fr. Oswalt. You are blessed to have him.
It was just before writing this that I found my first rosary bead! I offered it for your intentions. God bless you.

Hello, welcome to the Church, Sharon. Dr Rao is traditional Catholic and probably is writing about defamatory legends about the Catholic Church. I have not seen the book but maybe if you have specific questions they can be addressed.
