As I pointed out...donating ones body to science is a broad and imprecise phrase.Organ donation isnt the same as humans treated like cord wood to be used for various useful purposes.

Is it lawful to donate your body to science? Does this go against "burying the dead"? They can still be buried afterward, that is unless their parts are all dissected and flushed down a drain. Not curious for myself, just curious in general. That question can be expanded to include any diseased body part that is amputated or a healthy part that is severed from trauma. Do you keep it in the frig until your funeral? Or let the hospital dispose of it? In nursing school, I only got to dissect cats and cow hearts. I can't imagine today's physicians not practicing on a cadaver.

Again...is a body part the body? Is donating a kidney the same as donating the body to science? Maybe only non catholic bodies can be used...at least some good can come from the damned? Of course it might not be able to sort them. Thinking about it...maybe my position is Catholics should not?

I think the best thing would be to make sure the person is dead, as in wait a day or two or three, before anyone has the opportunity to begin anything in the way of transplanting tissue or dissection. I didn't really ever think that the culled tissue was being disposed of in regular biohazard bags. I thought there was special disposal for them. We had access to cadavers in college and I was able to see a body prepared for autopsy.

i'm in the process of looking into donating my body to science. so far havent decided on an anatomical donation program yet. But if anything I definitely plan on donating my brain to Columbia University. Hoping it can contribute to finding cures for mitochondrialdiseases.
Originally I didn't even want to be embalmed, just bury me within 24 hours of death, no viewing, and do a requiem mass after the fact. only issue with donating to science is a lot of these antatomical donation programs do cremation afterwards, i am trying to find one that will allow me to be buried when all is said and done. the one at Columbia said they keep your remains for up to 2 years...that's a long time.

Proper respect of the body is necessary. Pius XII was clear about that. Cremation is not a respect for the body, so much so that the Church specifically prohibits it by law. If they insist on cremation, and will not guarantee a proper burial, have nothing to do with them.
