I'm looking for various solutions, other than staying inside, for mosquito control. I know it only goes so far if my neighbor has, let's say, a pool in the backyard of his abandoned house. I hate putting down poison because the kids play in the yard. We do have bats that come by on summer evenings, which helps, I am sure. Has anyone tried anything that has worked or partially worked to reduce the number of mosquitos? I'd really like to sit outside more often in the evening.

I don't know of anything that works to reduce the number of mosquitos. If we want to sit outside in the evening we sit in a ring of citronella candles. It doesn't keep them completely away, but it helps a lot.

We are actually in the middle of PERMETHRINALLTHETHINGS due to ticks but it works for mosquitos. We were thinking about treating all of the fabric items on the deck. The above product I use when camping, works decently.

A lot of people complain about the heat but I think of temperature in terms of a misery index. I'm just as miserable at 85 with 90% humidity as I am at 110 with 8% humidity. Either way summer is just plain miserable. BUT our winters are fabulous <insert singing>. I can sit on my patio on a January morning having breakfast while my family back east is bundling up in -20 weather just to walk to the mail box!

I agree, humidity is awful. 50% humidity here is really low. Most summer days it is more than 80% plus 95 degree weather. I remember being in Arizona once, hiking the grand canyon in August. It was one of those 110 days. We hiked fast, and my shirt never got soaked with sweat because it evaporated almost instantly.

Some people put bat houses in their yards, because bats eat about a million mosquitoes every night... Here is a recipe a friend of mine from Colorado almost swears by, and sent me this spring. I haven't got around to trying it yet though...
