The root beer finally carbonated, and it turned out so-so. I wouldn't recommend making this recipe. Something about it just tasted off. Maybe if I would have used a gingerbug instead of whey it would have tasted better. Also, it needed to be more sweet.
I'll probably try again some other time with a different recipe.
If you want the absolute best homemade soda around, you need to start making water kefir. I make it weekly, and it's my whole family's favorite beverage, hands down. It has amazing health benefits, too! I'll probably just stick a fancy bottle of that in my goody packages this year instead of root beer.

This seems the best video. question: what does this taste like...the one video said that there is no sugar taste when its done. So Im like...bleh...also does it turn to booze?

Vox, the kefir grains eat the sugar, thus producing probiotics. The longer you let it ferment, the less sugar will be in it. I ferment mine to where it is no longer sweet, but you don't want to wait too long because your grains will start deteriorating if they have no more sugar to eat for more than a couple days.
The magic is in the second fermentation. After your kefir grains have fermented the sugar water, strain it off and drink it as is, or do a second fermentation. I always do a second fermentation because that's how you get it to be carbonated like soda, and it's also where you can flavor it any way you want. To second ferment it, fill a flip top bottle (like grolsch) about 1/4 of the way up with juice and fill it the rest of the way up with the finished kefir. Cap it off and let it sit 24-48 hours depending on how carbonated you like it. So good. Mango is our favorite!
Yes it does produce trace amounts of alcohol, but not much. Still safe for kiddos.

It has a taste of its own. I cannot think of anything that it tastes like. Tangy, yet surprisingly mild unlike kombucha. The second ferment tastes like whatever juice you use, plus tanginess. Our favorite flavor is mango, followed by peach, cranberry and pink lemonade.

I made most of our Christmas presents for people this year to save money, and it took SO MUCH time that I finally finished the last one today for traditional Catholic friends we are getting together with on Sunday to exchange gifts. I usually visit them every Epiphany but things were a bit crazy this year with my husband catching a terrible virus that developed into Oral Thrush and more. It has been like a whirlwind out here! Sorry I haven't stayed more in touch. And now baby is under 3 months away! How time flies!
Anyhow, I started probably 2 months before Christmas making our gifts for people. I knitted hats, scarfs, coasters, little stuffed snowball ornaments with button eyes; made framed lace wall hangings for holding earrings; chapel veils; beaded necklaces; a BBQ Apron for my dad; put some outfits I had sewed and collected from thrift store for some women I know; and made pillows for our futon because my husband was always taking the pillows from our bed to make the futon more comfortable. ;-)
Also have been working on making maternity and nursing clothes. Phew... It has been busy! Hope you all have been well! :-)

Thanks!😊 I was very grateful to have been able to find ways to make gifts which were meaningful and useful to our friends and family yet which required time instead of money. I DEFINITELY learned a LOT more about knitting in these past few months! 😉
