The execution of the Carmelite Sisters during the French Revolution was on July 17. It was so shocking to the people that that the Reign of Terror came to an end shortly afterward. History reports that they did indeed sing until their deaths one by one. Here is the final scene from the 1960 movie Dialogue of the Carmelites. Interesting to note is that French composer Poulenc experienced a re-conversion to the Catholic faith in adulthood and wrote a very famous opera (Dialogue of the Carmelites) based on the story.
