Just curious. It would be nice if there were some other quilters here... So, I am not really a quilter, but last year I made the project of a life-time! An elder lady I know crocheted a bunch of little circular stars to make an afghan, but gave up finishing the project. Now, I don't know how to crochet, but I do know how to knit and sew. So, her granddaughters (who don't crochet or knit) gave me the pieces thinking that I might find some use for them. What I ended up doing was knitting a bunch of tiny little squares to go between all the circles, and then treated it like a quilt and sewed them all together to make a blanket. And then I gave it to back to the family as a Christmas present! I probably spent somewhere between 100-200 hours on it! Wow! It was a project, and after that I think I might have the perseverance to make an actual quilt. How about you? How long have you been a quilter? I just LOVE quilts! One day I will actually sit down and make one... Do you do any other types of sewing? I make a lot of my skirts, jumpers and vests. I still have to figure out buttoned shirts, and am attempting to make a swim dress this year.

I have quliter and come from a long line of quilters. The only things I've made are a purse, a doll quilt, and a zip bag.

My mother is a quilter extraordinaire! I've tried to pick it up from her, but I'm just not thrilled with it. For some it really is a passion. When my mom learns that I'm pregnant, she makes about 3 girl quilts and 3 boy quilts and chooses the one to give at the end. She can't stop herself, lol.
I've made quilted stockings and am currently working on a denim quilt made from my husbands old jeans. I might finish it in 5 years or so.
Even though I don't care for quilting, I adore quilts. If I were to count, I bet I would come up with 20 or so in my house- most of them made by family of generations both past and present.

Maybe when all the children are grown up, you can make quilts for their children!

Then when I got engaged, I had the brilliant(?!) idea of making my wedding gown. 10 yards of satin, what was I thinking? Then, I got into quilting. I didn't quilt a lot when my daughter was growing up, no time really... But I slowly got back into it. I've made about 15 quilts, baby quilts, quilts for my daughter's bed, one for my brother and sister-in-law. We still don't have a quilt, made by me, on our bed. The next one will be for us. I grown to love hand quilting. I do not enjoy quilting a large quilt on a home sewing machine. Not fun.

I don't know if these are decorative or all heirloom but as your family grows, you will learn that you can never have enough blankets.

I have been thinking that it would be neat to learn how to make them for myself and/or my friends. I would love any pointers, or at least recommendations of what NOT to do!

We do love being cozy... Ha! I was thinking, laying them on the floor or over the couch for sick kids (not the really nice ones, mind you), alternate blankets for bed wetters, but then there is the good stuff like bundling up on a cold night, blanket forts, lap blankets to save money on heat, or houseguests. We just have so many blankets, they are always getting rotated for one reason or another.

I thought that sewing it was easy. It's a *lot* of fabric, though. And some styles are easier than others. Are you comfortable putting in a zipper?

Are you comfortable putting in a zipper? Yeah... I remember the first time I made a skirt thinking I only needed a yard of material... Now, I always make sure that I have at least two... I learned how to sew by trial and error. (Lots of them too... ) I still haven't figured out how to make button us dress shirts, but I definitely know how to put it zippers. I never managed to use the sewing machine for the zippers, but always sew them by hand because it is just easier for me that way. Material can be expensive, but I have been able to find a lot of deals at thrift stores and online. I am grateful.
