The following: Anglican Ordinations, Theology of Rome and Canterbury in a Nutshell, Rev. H. C. Semple, S.J., 1906, is found on archive.org linked HERE
A few comments:
1. The book is very short, but explains a very complex theological matter in a succinct manner, making it easy to understand even for laymen.
2. There are many longer books on this subject that get into more depth, but this book is great for those with not too much time, or just want a snapshot of the matter to grasp it, or don't have the time or attention to read the longer treatises on the matter.
3. Fr. Semple focuses on the theological reasons of why the Anglican orders for the priesthood and episcopacy are not valid, and explains that they fail on two counts, defect in form, and defect in intention. He explains the theology of both, and then proceeds to explain why the .Anglican rite does not meet the standard for validity.
4. Fr. Semple then provides an Appendix of all Eastern rites and shows that they do not support the novel Anglican Edwardine form,
Some may ask, why should we care about this centuries old controversy that was definitively settled by Pope Leo XIII in the 19th century? The principles that were taught by Pope Leo XIII and the Catholic theologians in explaining exactly why the defect of form and defect of intention caused the invalidity of the Edwardine Ordinal can also be applied to the novel 1968 rite of Paul VI for the consecration of bishops.
In order to understand why the novel 1968 rite is doubtful, it is very useful to understand why the Edwardine Ordinal was determined to be invalid. Interestingly enough, the Anglican theologians who defended their novel rite, appealed to the Eastern rites, just as the defenders of the 1968 rite do, but in both cases they fail, the eastern rites give them no support. Both rites are made up novelties that have substantially deviated from the Catholic rite.
