A question was posed to me in regards to the traditional bishops and priest list on this forum:

Thank you for providing this research on the holy orders of so many independent priests and groups. Can you recommend to me what groups or priests are valid and good to go to and which are not?

There are many issue at play in resolving this matter:
1. First and most important: You must be morally certain that the bishop or priest in question is valid. I am confident that any priest ordained by the SSPX bishops, CMRI, SSPV, Bp. Sanborn, Bp. Dolan, or Bishop Williamson are valid. Regarding independents, you must carefully study their ordination documentation. What bishop ordained them? What is the consecration information of the bishop? If you cannot figure it out, stay away!
Regarding SSPX, they are no longer conditionally ordaining men who leave the Novus Ordo "priesthood," so be aware of this. There are now a lot of cases of this, so it's not a small problem anymore! It is no longer safe to presume that the priest staffing any particular chapel was ordained by Archbishop Lefebvre or the four bishops consecrated by him. Do your homework and be sure about the holy orders of any priest of the SSPX!
2. Does the bishop, priest or group assert jurisdiction? If yes, then they are usurping the power of the lawfully commissioned hierarchy! Stay away! The only groups that I am aware of that do this are SSPV, Bp. Sanborn's group and Bp. Dolan's group. Some independent bishops and priests may also assert jurisdiction. I strongly urge any Catholic to avoid any bishop, priest or group that usurps the power of the hierarchy and pretends that they have legitimate authority to bind the Catholic laity to their opinions or conclusions on the issues of crisis in the Church.
I know for certain that the SSPX, CMRI and Bishop Williamson do not in word or practice attempt to exercise jurisdiction over Catholics. With that said, some priests within these groups may adopt views not completely in line with their organization so be aware. But, generally speaking, these groups are safe.
3. Is the bishop or priest of good moral character? Are your children safe around him? Is your family safe hearing his sermons or advice in confessions?
I would say that generally speaking I am sure that the priests or the SSPX, CMRI and those affiliated with Bishop Williamson are safe. Regarding independents, do your homework! Ask around, look online, go without your family at first to be sure about them before exposing your wife and children!
Never forget that traditional priests are not sent by the Catholic Church. They have no dimissorial letter approving their ordination, and no lawful commission from the Catholic Church. They are not supervised and governed by the lawful diocesan bishops of the Catholic Church, as there are none any longer, at least in the Latin rite! You can request the sacraments from such priests, but you are the judge of the situation, as to whether it is prudent to make such as request. Many of these men are good men who love the Faith and understand their canonical situation, but others have questionable character, or in some cases dare to assert jurisdiction and usurp the power of God's lawful hierarchy over the flock of Christ, so be careful!
