Is there anything wrong with giving your guardian angel a name for the purpose of referring to them more personally when praying to them? I see that the Novus Ordo Vatican has a document discouraging this, but was this ever discouraged by the Church prior to Vatican II? Apart from that, the reasons I've seen for why we shouldn't name our guardian angels are 1. naming something signifies authority over that thing, and we don't have authority over our guardian angel, and 2. our guardian angels already have names, which we should look forward to learning after this life. I'm not sure if these are really valid or sound arguments against the practice.

I think Fr Rippinger opposed the idea.

the reason fr Ripperger gave was that we do not have Authority over our Guardian angels, and therefore cannot name them.

the reason fr Ripperger gave was that we do not have Authority over our Guardian angels, and therefore cannot name them. This is an interesting discussion. I’ve never even heard of this and have never come across it in anything I have read. My view is that the reasoning above is sound. Unless an approved source can be found to support this practice, I don’t think it should be used.

That seems reasonable. It is so much easier to talk to him if I have a name.. I guess I will call him Angelo.

God seems to be very particular about names...unlike inner city welfare moms...So I dont think we should presume upon the Angelic hosts...no name...just my guardian dear.

GUARDIAN ANGEL PRAYER O MOST holy Angel of God, appointed by God to be my guardian, I give thee thanks for all the benefits which thou hast ever bestowed on me in body and soul. I praise and glorify thee that thou condescended to assist me with such patient fidelity, and to defend me against all the assaults of my enemy.Blessed be the hour in which thou were assigned me for my guardian, my defender and my patron. In acknowledgment and return for all thy loving ministries to me, I offer thee the infinitely precious and noble Heart of Jesus, and firmly purpose to obey thee henceforward, and most faithfully to serve my God. Amen. O my good Angel, whom God, by His Divine mercy, hath appointed to be my guardian, enlighten and protect me, direct and govern me this day. Amen.

I had heard you shouldn't name your Guardian Angel, but then someone said that her Guardian Angel had told her his name. I daresay that's allowed?

Here is an article explaining why you shouldn't name your Guardian Angel:

Demons want the laity to know their names...so upon saying them more authority is ceded to them.
