When you pray a 54 day novena, the first 3 novenas (27 days) are supposed to be petition, that is asking for something and then the next 3 novenas (27 days) are supposed to be in thanksgiving. Are you thanking God for giving you the thing you are asking for, that He hasn't actually given you, yet? Or are you thanking Him for all your blessings in general? Silly question, no doubt, but still I'd like to know.

Silly question, no doubt, but still I'd like to know. It seems from the context of what Our Lady said to the girl, Fortuna Agrelli, that the thanksgiving is for what was petitioned. Our Lady said, "Whoever desires to obtain favours from me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving." The context seems to be connecting the three novenas of thanksgiving to the three novenas of what was petitioned. Even if the petition was apparently not granted, I still think that the three novenas of thanksgiving must be completed to fulfill the request of Our Lady. Perhaps God may answer the petition in another way. I can tell you a personal story. When my mother was very sick with a terrible form of Leukemia, I prayed this Novena, all 54 days for her to be cured, but she was not cured, and passed away, despite this novena and countless prayers by hundreds of Catholics. I always accepted that the novena did not go unanswered, as it was God's will, but that the novena benefited her in some other way, that I do not know.

Once we are praying the rosaries in Thanksgiving, it will be nice to think about what we are thanking God for. I know we are supposed to pray with confidence and it is helpful to know we are not being presumptuous.
