This has been circulating the web, it's from a Ukrainian Catholic parish, and sums up my own views on the matter:

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with a little crying at Mass... I sometimes do it myself when I get over-emotional about a sermon... That being said, if a child is screaming at the top of their lungs, it might be a good thing to take them out until them quiet down.

I think the idea that children and babies are too loud at mass is modernist. I don't see Our Lord stopping His speech or prayer to tell a mother with a crying baby to go away.
If we look back prior to modern times, I think we would find parish masses to be quite noisy. Since the mass is for everyone from the poor and lowly to the rich and mighty, and given that mostly "common" Catholics populating the Church militant, the times we live in are an anomaly and a break with the past.
If you think about it, considering the duties of Catholics throughout all ages of the Church to hear mass on Sunday and all of the issues surrounding attendance: weather, harvest, sickness, transportation, childcare, one parent households, etc. one would have to assume there was quite a bit of noisy rabble in the parish church.
Can we imagine traveling for 30 minutes in the snow, on foot, with a crying baby in 1575 to hear Sunday mass? What about having to change a diaper?

Then imagine some old crow scolding your child for making noise I'm at the point in my life where if the baby is bothering me that badly, like let's say I was having a sudden migraine and he was next to my ear, I would leave the church and go sit outside in the car. If children are bothering someone, they should leave.

I guess the closest that we would have to this time would be Padre Pio at San Giovanni Rotundo. I am curious what was done then?

I think a distinction can be made between a baby crying and a two year old having a tantrum. A baby should be fed or changed and will usually be content then. A two year old having their Sunday fit should be taken out. The parents should do some training the other days of the week. I think if a kid can sit through a movie they probably have the capability to be taught to be quiet in church.
