This is just a thread for anything about Lent. I thought it better to start one for this year because it's a new year, people might like to try different things, or maybe they have new ideas rather than try to bump an older post. It's easy to get stuck in a rut.
What are your thoughts on Lent? Do you have anything you might like to share, a quote, a book, etc?

Alright, Lent is soon.
Right now, I'm getting ready to brine a turkey for the smoker. It's not huge but the leftover should take care of us for the week, or at least lunch until Tuesday. We will do pancakes or waffles on Shrove Tuesday, as it is a favorite custom of my children. im cleaning out the fridge over the next few days. I've done a shopping run but the grocery store I chose had a lousy selection. I did buy some vegetable broth and some meatless ramen, which ended up being waaaaay to spicy, even for me.
During Lent we give up usual electronic amusements and when we have time, we make rosaries and watch religious movies. I will order a few different beads and rosary parts this year, as well as repair any old ones.
One of my New Year's resolutions worked out really well, which was to do an overhaul of scheduling the kids' school day so we will spend Lent really working away at academics.
I am hoping to spend more time posting here, the things that I read, and just other interesting Catholic topics now that I have had time to implement some changes in my life and they are going well. I will also be starting a Lenten recipe thread because I want to learn to make beans and also vegetable broth in my Instant Pot.
Now, on the topic of alms. I have thought about it, and will continue to discuss it with my husband but it might be nice to give to a Catholic family in need, of which I know two. If anyone might want to join us in that, maybe we could make it a group effort? I know many people might be unaware but there are many very poor people among us at our parishes and chapels who suffer quietly.
I am resolving to be more focused in my prayer, which for a Mom of a toddler, is about the equivalent of mountain climbing. I also see a few more instances where my family could add in some new prayer habits. Lastly, and this may take a good long while, I have an idea for a book that I'd like to work on.

Okay, I've been wanting to ask this... about the abstaining from certain oils, like olive oil. Is that just the OS or do some Catholics do that as well? The reason why I ask is because let's say one wanted to fry some mushrooms or brown some onions, what would they use in the pan? It looks to me that the option would be margarine or to use water/vegetable broth, since wine would be out of the question. I just read a statement from an eparchy that said fake butter and such are legit but go against the spirit in the spirit of the law. That was refreshing.

Never in my life heard of no olive oils. Just no dairy or eggs first and last days of lent.

Never in my life heard of no olive oils. Just no dairy or eggs first and last days of lent. I figured out why. The fast varies only slightly in each rite but what I had read was talking about keeping the older, stricter fast voluntarily as a pious practice. It seems that many families go above and beyond, which is great. The tough part is sorting Catholic sources from the schismatic ones.

In the Roman Rite, do we have to also skip eggs and dairy on Ash Wednesday?

In the Roman Rite, do we have to also skip eggs and dairy on Ash Wednesday? No. Just meats and anything made with flesh meat--of a warm blooded animal. Lard is allowed, which I only learned about five years back.

I remember bits and pieces of this from when I was a kid and we went to the Byzantine Liturgy for a couple years... Do you ever go to the Latin Mass too, or just the Eastern Rite?

I found out a couple years back that in the Latin Rite you are allowed to drink milk or juice between meals. This is helpful for those who are having to fast for the first time, or if you have more of a physical job but still want to keep the fast. :-)

It may surprise you to know that I have attended a Latin Mass less than a half a dozen times my whole life.

It may surprise you to know that I have attended a Latin Mass less than a half a dozen times my whole life. Actually, it does not surprise me. That was sort of the impression I got over the past couple years knowing you here, which is why I asked the question. Remind me again, which Eastern Rites are the most trustworthy and have not been changed in the past 20 years?

define change...and I can only speak to the ruthenian /ukranian Byzantines My family went to a Maronite Byzantine chapel for a couple years when I was 6-8 years old. Yet, they adopted many changes in the past 20 years for the worse. Some chapels took the "Filioque" out of the creed like the Orthodox, and others applied changes making them almost like the novus ordo... I am just trying to understand whether you have seen problems like this at your chapels too, and if there is anything to watch out on the Eastern Rite side of things. It has been many years since I really went to the Divine Liturgy regularly, and am trying to get a basic idea of it all again, and whether there is anything to watch out for.
